Bass hunting is a very common and popular type of fishing. Majority of bass fishing are found in both freshwater and saltwater. They are also available through ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and creeks. Once you have the basics that regard to the conditions and locations where bass are most likely to be, then you stand a good chance when fishing for them.

Many factors influence the location of bass; this may include water conditions, weather, water levels, light and the availability food. These are some of the 3 major elements that have to be present in water body so that bass can survive; oxygen, food and cover.

The most favorite meal for bass is crawfish, they prefer this to shad. Basically, crawfish are normally available in large numbers and they are an easy catch for Bass. Despite of this, bass normally feed on almost anything ranging from mice, ducklings, rats, frogs, snakes, salamanders, lizards, worms, grub, the baitfish, the insects, and even leeches. This rare ability of the fish feast on almost anything is what makes majority of people to enjoy fishing bass.

Oxygen is the other key factor in locating the bass fish. The rule the old law here is that the cool the water temperature, the higher the content of oxygen. Some of the most commonplace area that bass seek for cover includes formulated wood structures such as docks, pilings and fabricated wood structures. They are known to hide beneath floating wood pieces decomposing wood. The second ideal location to fish for bass is in the weeds. Rocks are also a good place that bass seek for cover. But rocks are not that much dependable as weeds can be or wood, bass also enjoy feeding on decomposing pieces of wood within rocks. But because rocks do not yield oxygen, they are not that much reliable.

In fishing, each person has his own opinion, in most cases these opinions range from source to location. There are some bass fishing lures and baits which are much suggested for bass fishing because they could be very useful if you haven't tried them. But remember that overcast is always ideal for water temperatures, but then you may have to decide whether you are determined to sit throughout so as to catch bass. Swim Bait Tips with Kelly Jordan

Over my winter break I got the chance to check out a couple of fishing shows. It was at The Let’s Go Fishing Show in Collinsville, IL that I got to listen to a seminar by Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Kelly Jordan on the art of fishing swimbaits. Kelly Jordan has proven that he knows a thing or two about throwing a swimbait. He has used swimbaits to score a couple of top tournament finishes.

Kelly said that the biggest mistake anglers make when throwing a swimbait is that they try to impart too much action in the bait. Everybody wants to throw a swimbait out there and real it fast like a rattle trap or they want to give it a lot of added action with hops of the rod. The secret to presenting a swimbait is to try and reel them as slow as possible most of the time without imparting any action of the rod. He says it blows peoples mind when they get in the boat with me and I’m just throwing the bait out there and slowly reeling it back to the boat nice and easy. You want to also on the retrieve try and create a small bow in the line. That little bit of slack in the line allows the bait to swim with natural action which is key for catching the big ones.

When it comes to choosing what kind of swimbaits to throw he says that the soft plastic ones are the best. The pros have noticed that they catch a lot more and bigger bass throwing soft plastic baits like the Lake Fork Trophy Lures “Live” Magic Shad than the hard plastic jointed ones. The fish seem to hit these kinds of baits a lot harder and they seem to generate the most strikes. Sometimes the hard plastic ones will produce more but day in and day out your bread and butter swimbaits are the soft plastic ones.

Along with giving the bait the correct presentation you need to have the right kind of rods for the job. Kelly said you want to make sure you have a heavy action rod with a soft tip that is at least 7 foot. The line size to use is 17 to 20lb fluorocarbon because it sinks Sometimes mono line can work to your advantage if the situation arises where you want to float your bait a little higher on the retrieve say for instance if you are fishing grass. When it comes to setting the hook its best to hammer them. Kelly described swimbait bites as one of the most vicious strikes you will ever experience. Often times he says the fish will literally try and rip the rod out of your hands. The fish flat out hammer them.

The best conditions for throwing a swimbait according to Kelly are when it is sunny and there is a bit of wind. The fish are able to see the bait but at the same time the wind breaks up the surface condition just enough so that they can’t get the best look at it. The worst kind of conditions you can get for throwing a swimbait are when it is dead calm. Elite Pro Terry Scroggins was also at the seminar and he was able to chime in on what fishing a swimbait is like under the wrong conditions. He said it is truly amazing how many 6 to 8lbers you will see following your bait. He says it can get so addicting because you want to believe that one of them is going to actually commit to the bait but if it’s the wrong kind of conditions you are just setting yourself up for a lot of heart breakers.

After listening to these Pros talk about throwing swimbaits I can’t wait to get out on the lakes around here. There are plenty of Ozark lakes around here where there is enough water clarity for a swimbait bite to turn on it’s just going to take some practice to become a master of it. What is Fishing Bait?

There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another.

Fishing baits usually weigh from ¼ to an ounce to three ounces. The most popular weight preferred by the majority of bait casters is the 5/8-ounce bait, while the average is between ½ and 3 quarters of an ounce. Baits can either be used as a whole or cut into chunks. Anglers can also use dead or live baits.

The Different Types of Bait

There is a wide array of organisms being used as fishing baits. Among the different types used in fishing, the commonly used are the small fishes. These consist of widely used fishing baits such as herring, anchovies, menhaden, and some others that are inborn to certain local waters. Larger fishes are usually used as chunk baits.

Fishing baits can be used whole, chunk, and strips, based on the activities of the type of fishes being chased. The size of the fishing bait is usually well matched with the size of the fish being hunted. Other common organisms used for bait fishing are crabs, worms, shrimps, crabs, clams, sand fleas, eels, and squid. Among all of the organisms mentioned, the crabs and the shrimps are the well-liked organisms to be used as fishing baits.

Shrimp are favorably used as fishing bait and are considered to be very valuable bait for a huge number of saltwater fish, especially those that are considered “inshore fish” like redfish, speckled trout, shook, and a lot more.

Whereas, various crab species, especially the fiddler crab, sand flea, and the blue crab, are perfect fishing baits for many varieties of “inshore fishes” and “bottom fish.” These crabs are usually clasped through their shell, usually on either the right or left of the head.

1) Worms - Without a question, worms are the most popular bait to use, when fishing for bass. There is a reason for it too, Bass LOVE them and they sure are hard to resist when you are a bass in the water. Great to use because they are easily stored and use them anywhere.

2) Minnows - Another popular live bait for bass fishing. Bass love them too, but they take more effort to keep. Unlike worms, minnows must be contained in a container with and air tank. If you have a boat, then minnows are excellent choice of bait, but if you fin yourself on foot, they are not the best option.

- Artificial Lures - Bass are not that smart, but presentation is key!

1) Plastic worms - Absolutely love to use them, using them with a drop shot technique is very effective. Many choices in colors and types.

2) Spinner Baits - A great lure and a very adjustable one at that for bass fishing. Easily changeable blades and skirts. Make the perfect spinner bait for the water your fishing. They are a great trolling bait, which is an excellent way to cover the most area of water for bass.

3) Crank BaitsAction looks good to a hungry bass. Another plus is that there are a variety of different lip sizes. The lip size is what causes the crank to go deep or shallow. The large the lip, the deeper the crank bait goes. The speed is another factor that determines life like presentation and depth.

Florida Lake Okeechobee Bass Fishing February

Saturday on-board  with Kit,Abe,Mike,and Jeff all these guys came down from Canada to fish world famous Lake Okeechobee, the bass factory of Florida.  These guys had  two boats, Capt Brett and Mark Rogers for full day adventure.  They fished one of same days as the FLW  like they were in the Tournament and caught  over 100 bass all on artificial lures and up to 7.5 lbs.   Great day on Big O, great job guys and awesome fishing.

FWC to celebrate Lake Trafford restoration with free fishing for kids, wildlife release

To celebrate the restoration of Lake Trafford in Collier County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites families to witness the release of wildlife and introduce their children to fishing, for free, Saturday morning.

At 1,500 acres, Lake Trafford is the largest freshwater lake south of Lake Okeechobee. Already, water clarity, native vegetation and the number of small fish have improved. Largemouth bass fingerlings stocked last year are growing well. Anglers seeking crappie are catching and releasing the bass.

“Lake Trafford is an important resource for boating, fishing and wildlife-viewing,” said Barron Moody, regional administrator for the FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. “One of the FWC’s primary goals in restoration was to create healthy habitat for our fish and wildlife resources. This means more recreational opportunities for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.”

To mark the milestone, FWC Commissioner Ron Bergeron will be among the dignitaries speaking at a public celebration hosted by the South Florida Water Management District. The festivities begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Ann Olesky Park in Immokalee.

“The FWC is proud to have teamed up with our local, state and federal partners to restore Lake Trafford,” said Bergeron. “Restoring this lake and its fishery will improve the entire ecosystem, thus benefitting the local community.”

Following Bergeron’s remarks, staff from the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, assisted by the FWC, will release juvenile yellow-crowned night herons on Lake Trafford’s shoreline. The Busch sanctuary raised and rehabilitated the wading birds after their nest was destroyed.

At the conclusion of the public-speaking portion of the festivities, the FWC will sponsor free fishing for children. Staff will loan rods and reels to the kids and provide bait. This activity will be at the pier at Ann Olesky Park.

Over the past several years, the lake has been the focus of a multi-agency restoration project. The lake was dredged of millions of cubic yards of muck that had triggered algal blooms and fish kills.

What Lures, What Fish?

Spoons

Considered the most simple of all other lures, they got their name because they look like the head of a spoon. They act for the bait fish by doing a flickering and wobbling movement or action. Spoons are excellent for starters in lure fishing; easy to use and very affordable.

Spinners

The spinner is basically a blade wherein it does a rotating action on a spindle when being retrieved or taken back through the water as well as it gives off a flash as light is being reflected on the revolving blade, characterizing the bait fish’s scales and movements. This is a lure that is flexible because only can one verify and know the retrieve depth by the period or time frame one leaves before one starts a retrieve, one can also alter the speed of the revolving blade around the spindle, by either speeding up or slowing down one’s retrieve. For the Trout and Mullet, a smaller size is recommended, and a larger spinner with the pike liking, along with the treble hook in a red wool.

Surface lures

These lures are used on the water surface and considered to be the most explosively thrilling of all lures as one could actually see the fish taking the lure, and the anticipation and the expectation of one looking forward of the take is an exciting experience. Soft baits

This is soft rubber bait that comes in various shapes and forms, with matching sizes and colors. These are commonly used for sea and fresh water fishing, which can be used on a weighted jig head handled in the same manner as the jerk bait, being managed as a plug is used.

Jerk baits

Having no movement of its own when in the water, the angler gives life to this lure; whenever the rod trembles or shakes or jerks, this lure can appear to have life. This lure for the most part, mimics an injured or wounded fish that the prey fish find tempting, and be compelled to thrust or lunge at.

For years businesses have rode on the vast interest Bass fishing has generated. Many people are hooked, pardon the pun, on this hobby and have elevated it to a sport and a passion. Resorts, sports gears and lines have been built and many more aspects have benefited from these interest.

Today, there are more and more people trying to learn and find out what the buzz is all about. Bass fishing is more than just catching a fish. Its now about getting those prized big bass and having the opportunity to show it off. For beginners there are lots more to bass fishing that meets the eye.

Although there was no particular gauge that was presented by the researchers, a survey was performed among the pro bass fishermen and it was found that plastic worms was the most patronized and ranking on the second and third place were the spinner bait and then the crank bait.

However, picking one of these 3 is not enough. Some factors are still needed to be considered. Primarily, you must consider if it is better to cover a smaller segment of water thoroughly or skim across a larger area as quickly as possible to find fish. Using a worm is slower, but absolutely effective and is very seductive to Bass. They do best when the fish are schooled over a particular structure.

The problem that usually arise with fishing with a worm is the inability to sense strikes. Usually the inability to sense them is due to a sinker that is too heavy and a line that is too thick.

To help you to overcome this predicament you are advised to use a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers. Here are some of its advantages:

• No moving lead on the line to dampen the feel of a gentle pickup

• You can apply the precise amount of lead to deliver the worm action needed

• It makes it easier for a bass to inhale the worm

• It aids in hook setting

• It's easier to shake loose from snags

• You can cause the worm to hang virtually suspended over the bottom when fishing shallow water.

To tell how much lead strip is needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Ease it into the water and watch it sink, it should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks to fast, take some off, etc. Make sure to use no heavier than 8-pound mono line - preferably 6 pound.

On the other hand, a Spinner bait can be moved more quickly across the surface and can be bounced on the bottom, sent against a tree limb and moved in many different ways in order to stimulate strikes. It is a great probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free construction.

Lastly, Crank baits cover a lot of water in a hurry. Using them, you can check out a spot without wasting too much time. You can use them for locating fish that may be scattered.

The most important thing is, no matter what lure you select for the particular lake that you are fishing on, you need to make it as easy for the Bass to get at it as possible. Drop that lure right in front of them. Scientists have proven that Bass calculate the amount of energy it will take them to go after the prey.

Discover and learn to use one of those lures that you preferred to use for you to really find enjoyment in bass fishing!

Aside from considering the lures, it is also important to determine the accurate time in going for bass fishing.

Dawn and dusk are definitely when the biggest bass can be brought in. First, remember that bass love ambush spots offering lots of cover from the baitfish. They like to hid, and pounce on their prey.

These bait fish are most active in the early morning or evening. When they feed, bass follow because the baitfish is less aware of threats when they feed. Go out fishing during these times for the best success.

When retrieving an underwater lure in poor light, keep it coming at a steady pace once it is set in motion. This will make it easier for bass to locate and grab it.

The last thing is, don't bother going out in the dawn/dusk when water is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature wipes out certain aquatics and terrestrials, which nullifies the food chain feeding.

Lures and proper time of going on bass fishing are ample factors only that must be taken into account because other aspects such as water quality considerations and weather conditions are also necessary for you to win the game on bass fishing!

Today I decided to start a special 5 part article series I am going to call Top Bass Fishing Tips. I plan on releasing a addition to the bass fishing tips series each day for a total of 5 killer bass fishing secrets to help you boat more bass. In this article I want to take a look at top water fishing for bass.

Top water fishing for bass both largemouth and for smallies has got to be the most exhilarating experience as the fish inhales the bait dramatically right before your eyes. Unlike other bass fishing techniques, top water bass fishing for bass is the most special. It is all about sight and sound. Take you eyes off of what you are doing even for a moment and you could miss landing that lunker. Top water fishing for bass requires that you master 2 techniques, the twelve o-clock rod handling technique and the six o'clock rod handling technique.

The twelve o-clock rod handling technique is a fancy term I like to use describing the position of the rod after casting. Just like the name suggests you hold the rod out in front of you with the rod tip pointing towards the sky, hence it's twelve o-clock. Where and when you would use this rod technique depends on the situation and that is the key to not only this but other bass fishing tips. The 'twelve o-lock' method works best in thick weed cover. Such top water fishing bass lures that go hand in hand with this rod technique are lures that imitate bait like frogs and rats. Another great lure choice are those cigar shaped bullets like the water demon. Because of the heavy weed cover use a solid medium heavy action rod with line that can handle the heavy weeds. Pumping and twitching the lure or bait on the retrieve will help keep you snag free.

The six o-clock rod handling technique is when you hold the rod out in front of you but this time the tip of the rod is just above the waterline, hence the term six o-clock. This is the rod technique of choice for open water. Fishing bass lures of choice here are popping those water chuggers and walking the dog with those cigar shaped bullets are as easy as eating apple pie using the six o-clock technique. Adding twitches and small pumps can add an erratic action to your retrieves and it helps to vary it up to keep the bass on the bite. If you were watching the FLW results from last weekend, it would be hard to argue against Lake Okeechobee right now.  That’s my pic for the current best lake, but things change from month to month and year to year. Top Bass Fishing Tips - Part Three - Bass Fishing From Shore

Welcome to the third article in the series Top Bass Fishing Tips. In today's article we are going to look at bass fishing from shore. Before we do again if you have missed any of the previous articles in the series, do a quick search and I'm sure you find them as the goal behind this series is to you with top bass fishing tips so that you can catch more bass.

Bass fishing from shore is not a new concept. In fact I think for most of my life I would consider myself a shore fisherman. Bass fishing from shore is a great opportunity for a lot of learning and experience in learning how to catch more bass.

The key to shore fishing is, knowing where to be at the right time. Smallmouths are great for catching from shore as often their haunts will only be casts length from the shoreline. The trick in getting the key right with shore fishing is understanding structure. If you were fishing from shore in the middle of summer in a spot devoid of weeds the I could safely say that you're wasting your time trying to catch more bass that way. Now if that same shoreline was full of weeds and stumps, then I would be all over it big time. Also what is the bank structure? Does it taper off gradually; does it have a fast slop into deeper water? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself as a shore fisherman before setting that pole in the water.

Also another great bass fishing tip from shore is for dock and pier fisherman. Bait and food tend to gather on the windward side of a pier or dock. This is the area where the wind is blowing and bringing in the food and baitfish. Fishing on the other side of the dock or pier might bring fish, but you'll more luck fishing on the side where the wind is blowing in. Find the food and baitfish, and you can find Bass.

The next top bass fishing tips is in learning when to fish. Ask any great shore fisherman and he'll tell you evenings and early mornings are the best time for success. The reason being, these low light conditions help to conceal the bass, making him feel less vulnerable plus it also gives a bass an advantage for his own ambushes on his food source. During the middle of the day is when most fish bass included hold even tighter to structure, and unless that structure is within casting range from shore, you can sure bet the bass have moved to deeper haunts till the evening comes.

Useful Tips To Fishing Bass In Texas

Lake Livingston-Great Catfish, Bass and Perch action. Catfish off the bank but a boat is best for the rest. Lakes Travis and Buchanan have excellent fishing for white bass, and Buchanan is one of the state's top striped bass producers. Anglers fish for largemouth bass there as well and in Lake LBJ, another of the Highland Lakes chain on the lower Colorado River.

Jigs, worms, and crankbaits have been catching crappies. Live worms or minnows, crankbaits, and jigs have caught some walleyes. Jigs, tubes and crankbaits have been the best choices for fishing the deeper waters. Bass fishermen who have access to farm ponds have been doing very well, as are anglers working some of the more popular lakes.

Largemouth bass are cover-oriented fish. They use structure - rocks, weeds, logs, grass, and ledges - to protect themselves from predators and to ambush food items that pass by. Largemouth/Spotted Bass are around brush and bluffs in pockets and coves. Flukes, Spinnerbaits, Tube baits, Finesse worms, Crankbaits are a good thing to be throwing on shale and rock banks 5-10 ft.

Summertime is an excellent time of year for using artificial lures because so many different baits can be effective. Summer water temperatures appear to be one variable that increases the lethality of the virus; almost all bass die offs documented in other states have occurred from June through September. Scientists do not know how the virus is transmitted or how it is activated into a disease, and no cure is currently known.

Smallmouth bass fishing is fun and exciting, in fact I think pound for pound smallmouth bass may just be the hardest fighting freshwater fish on the continent. Catching these fish with conventional spinning or casting gear is an experience in itself, though there is another way to fish for smallmouth bass that gets overlooked by most anglers. Smallmouth bass are fair on live baits. Walleye are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are good on root beer JDC curl tail grubs, 6" smoke/red tubes on ball jigheads, and Bleeding Shad Tiny Traps along main lake points and ledges in 5 - 15 feet. Crappie are fair to good on Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows around submerged brush piles along break lines.

Smallmouth bass can be good year round. Topwaters and crankbaits fished around rocky points and riprap can be very productive. Smallmouth bass tend to lurk in the cooler water of streams, especially below fast moving rapids, in holes, on the bottom and along steep banks and bluffs. Areas that are undercut by erosion are the perfect place to find bass because they provide good hiding spots, as are areas around large rocks and fallen logs.

Bait fish will be thick in these areas and the bass will be thick below. Baitfish are not at the peak of activity but they will be in good supply in the deeper water. The lake is really turning on this time of year and the fish should be biting well.

Anglers will also find catfish and white bass. Whitney Lake's winding, riverine waters are good for cruising and sailing. Anglers report that 50- to 100-fish days are not uncommon, and 2005 saw the lake record rise to a whopping 15.68 pounds. Anglers did well during the early evening hours from the bank and from boats. Best baits were extra-scented power baits, night crawlers, spinner/night-crawler combinations and crank baits.

Black basses are larger and longer-bodied than sunfishes and more predatory. The largemouth bass may grow to 32 in. Black bass are the most popular freshwater gamefish in the nation. And, Texas is one of the top states when it comes to producing trophy largemouths.

Top Bass Fishing Tips - Part Two - Where Are the Bass?

Welcome to Part Two of the series Top Bass Fishing Tips. If you missed any of the other articles in the series then just do a quick search for top bass fishing tips and you should be able to find the other articles. The goal of this series is to provide you with top bass fishing techniques to help you catch more bass. In today's article we will look at answering the crucial question where are the bass?

A lot of considerations come into play when we consider how to locate bass. The body of water we are fishing, weather conditions, structure and other elements but let's try and put these together to round out this bass fishing tip. So to try and help do that first I want to discuss water.

Water us made up of 3 strata. There is a top strata, a middle strata and a bottom strata. During the course of the year water tends to form into these 3 distinct layers, and easy to help you identify with this is concept is, have you ever gone swimming while you were up at the cottage or camping? I'm sure you have, right and as you were swimming you noticed that in the summer swimming along the top can be quite comfortable but dive down a few feet and you instantly notice a drop a in temperature. Now I'm not suggesting the middle layer is just a few feet beneath the surface, but it's just an example to help identify the concept of water strata. These strata play an important role in a fish's life. This is applicable to all fish species and not just for bass fishing. Without getting into a huge discussion about water strata, for now for this bass fishing tips I just wanted to get you used to the concept.

Things to consider when thinking about water strata and how we can use that in our bass fishing technique. Let's break it down.

Top Water Strata. This is a section of water that generally for the most part if the year is warmer then the other 2 layers. Although it is important to note that this layer also drops to the bottom during fall weather and is the first layer to become available in the spring on the surface. Ok to catch more bass in the top water strata consider proper bass fishing lure choice. For instance, top water or "floating" lures with splashing and darting actions can help trigger active fish in this zone of warmer water. Remember this zone becomes very active in the spring as the water stratifies and by summer becomes distinct. Also weather patterns and time of the day help to dictate when active bass may move into this layer of water.

Middle Strata of Water. Is often a transitional section of water that determines how the water will circulate during the yearly seasons and also acts as the definitive barrier of range of water temperatures that separate the top water from the bottom. Tacking advantage of these bass fishing tips for this section of water takes some consideration. Bass will usually hold in this water as a transition. Sometimes moving off to drop offs sections and holding in this strata yet still having access to the active top water. Finding choice bass locations that contain this middle strata along close access to top water habitat can make for some of the best bass fishing. Bass fishing lure choices here range from swimming action baits, rattle baits, shad rap style lures and other medium diving plugs.

Bottom Water Strata. This section of water is generally the coldest in terms of water temperature within a lake. This section of water also rotates to become the top water strata during certain times of the year so be aware of that and be ready to adapt to this to catch more bass. But to make bass fishing tips easier to understand let's stick with a summer scenario when this is the bottom strata. Bass fishing in this strata takes special considerations. Bass generally drop down here during certain weather patterns, when bass are spooked or go in-active. It is still possible to catch more bass here you just have to adapt. Bass fishing lure choices for this water layer are, worm rigs, flipping jigs, deep diving crankbaits and so on. Often the presentation method is slow and methodical to entice the bass to bite.

Record-breaking redemption on Lake Okeechobee

CLEWISTON, Fla. – Lake Okeechobee is back and the bass fishing has never been better. No one knows that more than local Belle Glade, Fla., pro Brandon McMillan. Fresh off a second-place finish at the recent EverStart Series event, McMillan surpassed the coveted 100-pound mark and set the new Walmart FLW Tour record for heaviest total weight.

The win is special for McMillan for several reasons. For starters, he led the EverStart event with one day left only to slip to second. And in 2009, his father Jimmy won the FLW Series event on Okeechobee. The family now has claimed two Tour-level victories in three years on the Big O, hauling in a quarter million dollars in the process.

McMillan started the tournament determined to flip mats, despite the urge to sight-fish in the warm, sunny weather. The more pressure the lake received, the stronger his pattern got as the chopped up vegetation served as the perfect retreat for weary prespawn females. Later in the tournament he caught a few postspawn bass – meaning he worked the ideal pattern in that fish were both coming and going to the mats.

He wasn’t getting as many bites as the other finalists, but the average size was much bigger. McMillan focused on the Dyess Ditch area of the lake, located approximately 12 miles west of the Kissimmee River. On day one he caught 27 pounds; on day two he sacked 28-14. Yesterday he put 25-5 in the boat, and today he rallied from fourth to first on the strength of a 25-pound, 7-ounce limit.

“When I started this tournament, I didn’t think sight-fishing could go the distance,” McMillan explained. “I thought flipping was the deal, but when they whacked them like that the first two days it worried me. I didn’t know if I’d be able to catch up.”

But the near-perfect weather experienced the first three days changed significantly Sunday. Cloudsrolled in and the wind picked up – all but killing the sight-bite for pro leader Chad Prough and second place Peter Thliveros. While the minor front made a difference, McMillan said that his experience at the EverStart event taught him how to relax and execute when the title is on the line.

“I never missed a beat today and that’s what I’m most proud of. I got five good bites and I put all of them in the boat.”

McMillan’s key baits this week were a black and blue Bruiser Intruder and a Gambler BB Cricket (June bug). He mainly used the Intruder but if the mat was too thick he’d pitch the Cricket. Both lures were tied to 80-pound Sufix braid and presented with either a 1-ounce or 1 1/2-ounce weight. His preferred rod was a 7 1/2 foot G Loomis flipping stick.

The 27-year-old UPS driver plans to call in sick Monday and then get back to work Tuesday. As for his future fishing plans, he’s unsure.

“I’ve dreamed about this (winning) for a long time; I watched my dad do it. To go head-to-head against guys like Tharp, Morgan, Scroggins and Peter T is just unbelievable. And to win it here, in front of everybody I know and grew up with – it doesn’t get any better than that.”

For a total weight of 106 pounds, 10 ounces, McMillan earned $125,000. He also etched his name in the FLW Tour record books next to heaviest total weight.

Tharp second

One of Randall Tharp’s biggest goals in bass fishing is to win at Lake Okeechobee. While Guntersville is considered his home lake, he travels to Okeechobee every winter to enter a few tournaments and sample some of the best bass fishing south Florida has to offer. This year Tharp moved to Okeechobee early and has spent nearly three months whacking and stacking. He took fifth at the EverStart and was among a handful of pretournament favorites for the Tour event.

The title once again proved elusive, but Tharp seemed comfortable with this result. In years past, he’s lost under some unusual circumstances such as mechanical failure.

“I just wanted one of us to win this tournament,” said Tharp, who fished within sight of McMillan of all week. “I would have liked it to be me but Brandon’s a class act. If you would have told me that I would’ve caught over 100 pounds and not won the tournament I would have said you’re crazy.”

There is clearly a mutual respect between the two anglers. McMillan said the most nerve-wracking part of the entire week was watching Tharp stick fish all day. When Tharp caught his kicker Sunday, McMillan said he about puked. On day two when Tharp broke his strongest flipping stick, McMillan was kind enough to loan him one.

Tharp’s day-four stringer weighed 20 pounds, 14 ounces – pushing him over the century mark to 102-2. For finishing second place, he earned $35,000. Before he heads to Beaver Lake for the first FLW Tour Major, he’ll make a detour and fish his first ever Bassmaster Classic in New Orleans.

Tharp’s main bait on Okeechobee was the new Attraxx Predator Craw, a bait he specifically designed for flipping thick grass.

Prough falls to third

After catching 30-pound-plus limits each of the first two days, Prough slowly saw his bountiful area run dry. His day-four catch weighed 13 pounds and pushed his total weight to 100 pounds, 15 ounces. For third place, the Chipley, Fla., native earned $30,000.

“I have no regrets,” said Prough. “These were the best four days of my life and I gave it everything I had.”

Prough shared the Kings Bar area with Thliveros and Fred Roumbanis. As the bite dwindled, Prough performed the best among the three – an impressive feat considering this was his first Tour-level event.

“It was cloudier and windier for sure, but I think most of the females finished and left. This morning I had to resort to catching a limit of bucks. At 10 a.m. I knew it was time to vacate and I ended up upgrading in other areas.”

Like McMillan, Prough used the Bruiser Intruder. He also mixed in a Reactions Innovations Trixie Shark as a search tool. The Trixie Shark was especially productive early in the tournament.

Scroggins fourth

Terry “Big Show” Scroggins put on a big show in his first-ever FLW Tour event – catching a 12-pound, 2-ounce bass Sunday, the biggest of the four-day slugfest. He found that brute at 9 in the morning. Unfortunately, he was unable to pair it with any other kickers and his stringer weighed only 22 pounds, 1 ounce. Scroggins finished the tournament with 99 pounds, 9 ounces – earning $25,000.

Like many, Scroggins employed a two-pronged approach. His search bait was a Smithwick Devil’s Horse, which was particularly effective because he could stop it over a bed and it would retain its position. In contrast, some of the more popular swimbaits like the Skinny Dipper and Big EZ sink when paused.

“I nicknamed the Devil’s Horse the donkey, because you fish it slow and steady. A lot of times they just roll on it, but then they’ve shown themselves and I could pitch back to it.”

Once he had a female located, Scroggins would employ a Yum Money Craw (molting craw color).

“I had three 7-pounders saved for today but they must have swam off over night.”

Scroggins’ primary area, located near the mouth of the Kissimmee River, was shared earlier in the week with 11th- and 12th-place pros Glenn Browne and Trevor Fitzgerald.

Powroznik fifth

Each of the last two days Duracell/Gillette pro Jacob Powroznik covered so much water in search ofspawning bass that his trolling-motor batteries died. It was a pattern he committed to from the start and instead of focusing on open areas, he pushed his boat back into thick reeds and hydrilla. He focused his efforts on the north end of the lake, up around Horse Island.

On day four the Prince George, Va., native caught a limit worth 18 pounds, 2 ounces – by far his lightest sack of the week. His lone kicker Sunday weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and fell to a Gambler Big EZ swimbait. Powroznik’s four-day cumulative weight registered 95 pounds even, good enough for fifth place and $20,000.

“I caught 95 percent of my fish this week on a new Attraxx bait I designed called the Jacobug,” said Powroznik. “The best color was watermelon-red, but I also used white.

“Today might have been a different story if the weather had been different. The clouds and wind made it much harder to sight-fish. Where I was fishing, there was 4 feet of water. They were spawning underneath the hydrilla and you had to look under there, which was tough without the sun.”

Rest of the best

Rounding out the top 10 pros at the FLW Tour event on Lake Okeechobee:

6th: Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., 89-1, $17,000
7th: Fred Roumbanis of Bixby, Okla., 85-3, $16,000 + $500 from Big Bass
8th: Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., 84-9, $15,000
9th: Peter Thliveros of Saint Augustine, Fla., 82-14, $14,000
10th: Jake Morris of McKee, Ky., 82-8, $13,000

The next FLW Tour event is slated for Beaver Lake in Rogers, Ark., March 3-6, the first of six Majors.

Hello everybody this is Captain Kip,This was the last fishing trip for 2010. I fished with Minoro Vehara and son. The fishing was slow due to the cold weather. We caught 12 fish up to 4 lbs. All the fish were caught on wild golden shiners, we had no bites on artificial.
